Winners and the runners up in the Northwest and Coleraine District Youth Leagues and Cups attended the league presentation evening in the Vale Centre at Greysteel where they heard special guest Iam McFaul explain what qualities may be required to help them achieve their ambitions. The ex Northern Ireland goalkeeper, who made over 390 appearances for Newcastle Utd before going on to manage and coach players such as Peter Beardsley and Paul Gasgoine (who he gave his first team debut ), told them how talent was only a small part of making the big time. He explained that hard work, dedication, discipline and respect for coaches, opponents and authority would all have its part in any players development. He went on to say that even if all these things were achieved there would still need to be an element of good fortune or luck involved for someone to be noticed but that is where platforms such as the NWCDYL are needed and he wished the league every success in the future.
The presentation party also included Victor Hunter who is probably the one man who represents football best throughout the northwest. A former Northern Ireland goalkeeper, Victor was born in Sion and had spells with Coleraine and Derry City. Kevin Doherty, Derry City Council Development Officer, Tony Young (chairman of the NW referees association) and representatives of the senior clubs from Coleraine, Institute and Oxford were amongst the other guests on the evening.
The league Chairman described how proud they were of what had been achieved in the inaugural year. He thanked the leagues main sponsor, MIM Engineering of Campsie for their financial backing. A special mention was made to the leagues Honoury President Harry Gregg and how the thoughts and prayers of everyone present were with him.
The Chairman went on to say that with the support of all those present the league would only get bigger and stronger. He said that the number of teams, from the league, in the latter stages of the NIBFA cups, proved that the quality was there and the general feedback from numerous discussions about next season were very positive.
Throughout the awards ceremony references were made to some of the old historic trophies that had been donated to the league. These are trophies that have long standing connections with football in the area such as the Sammy Walker trophy which was the original nortwest trophy. It had been kept in safe keeping until a suitable representative league had been established. Other trophies reintroduced to football were the Andrew Eakin Memorial Cup and the Paddy (Shorty) Doherty Cup. The League thanked the sponsors of these and all the other trophies on display.
The final trophy of the evening was presented for the Leagues U17 Invitational Cup. This saw teams from Letterkenny and Ballymoney Utd join existing clubs for what was a very competitive tournament that could potentially grow into something really special. With that thought in mind the league were delighted that the name Bertie Peacock be associated with the event. Berties son Russell was in attendance to do the honours on behalf of the Peacock family.
The night was brought to a close by the league Chairman who emphasised the importance of getting all the clubs in the area competing and involved in the league. He reminded everyone that registration for the 09/10 season is already open and applications can be requested through the 'contact us' tab on the league website or by phoning any of the committee members, also listed on the website. Clubs are reminded that they will have to provide the following information . Name of club, age group/groups you are considering registering and your contact details.

The NWCDYL ran its final Under 10 blitz at the University pitches on Saturday 21st February and it proved to be a fantastic advertisement for the future of youth football in the northwest area. Teams from the Coleraine Academy, Eglinton Eagles, Institute, Eastend and Oxford Utd all played their part in a very close and entertaining competition. The standard of football on display was quite outstanding considering the age of the participants. Each team was a credit to their individual clubs and the future standard of the game in the northwest can be looked forward to with great relish. The teams played each other once before being split into a Cup and Plate final. So close was the competition that no match in the qualifying stages was won by more than two goals and no team remained un-defeated. In fact they seemed take turns in coming out on top of the various games. The outcome of the qualifying stages was so close that penalties had to be took to decide who went through to the finals. Coleraine Academy came out triumphant on the day when they proved to strong for Eglinton Eagles in the Cup final. Oxford Utd took the Plate final with a win over Institute but it is quite clear that the main winner on the day was football. Some of the goals that were scored would grace any pitch and the level of commitment was plain to see by all but the most important thing of all was that everyone seemed to enjoy the whole occasion. Congratulations and thanks have to be passed on to Dave Martin and Keith Adams who organised the event and sponsored the trophies. Also a special mention to John McCormick who gave up his entire morning to referee and William Curry from the Coleraine Academy website for providing the photographs.
